Yuquan Temple
Issue time:2019-11-07

Yuquan temple is located on Qifu Mountain of Zhangcun Village, north of Hejin, about 10 kilometers away from the downtown city. It has a long history of more than 1,400 years. It was founded in the 14th year of Kaihuang of Sui Dynasty. Its predecessor was the ancestral temple of Geng Kingdom in Shang and Zhou dynasties; and it was later the earliest ancestral temple of the Zhao family in the Spring and Autumn Period. The historical story of "The Orphan of Zhao" took place here. The newly-built Yuquan temple is built according to the mountain situation. Sitting west and facing east, the temple covers an area of 15 mu. It follows the architectural pattern of the Ming and Qing dynasties and adopts a symmetrical pattern of central axes. In turn, there are the main gate, the hall of heavenly kings, the great Buddha’s hall, the hall of great mercy and the treasure pagoda. The layout is rigorous and symmetrical. With its exquisite architecture, magnificent momentum, brilliant aura, much joss-stick buring, it is the best destination for travel and worship Buddhism.

[Characteristic of Yuquan Temple-Water Splashing Festival]

The Water Splashing Festival, also known as "Buddha Bathing Festival", is a ceremony of ancient Brahmanism, which was later absorbed by Buddhism. The Water Splashing Festival has been a traditional Buddhist culture for hundreds of years. In the early morning of the festival, men, women and children dress in festive costumes and gather in the temple with clean water to clean the Buddha and pray for the blessing of the Buddha. After bathing Buddha, people begin to pour water on each other to express their blessings, hoping to wash away diseases and disasters with holy water and exchange them for a better and happier life. In order to pass on the traditional Buddhist culture, Yuquan Temple holds a water splashing festival on the 19th of the 6th of the lunar calendar (the day when Guanyin Bodhisattva became a Buddha) every year to pray for good weather and peace for the people. At that time, there will be a bonfire party and a cultural performance in the evening. The scene will be very lively and spectacular.
