According to the unofficial history, the writing brush was invented by Meng Tian who was a general in the State of Qin. When he led his troops to guard the border and passed Jiangzhou, he spread the pen making technology to the local artists. In the following two thousand years, after generation after generation of Jiangzhou people's inheritance, and constant reform and innovation, the process is becoming mature. Later, a lot of varieties were developed, especially the lanugo pen, the goat hair pen and the both are the best. By the time of Zhao Kuangyin, Emperor of the Song Dynasty, the production of writing brush had reached its peak and was all the rage. Jiangzhou writing brush is often imperial tributes, enjoying equal popularity with the southern Huzhou writing brush, known as "south Huzhou, north Jiangzhou." Han Yu, the first of “Eight Prose Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties”, once praised Jiangzhou writing brush to the utmost in "Changli ji • Biography of Mao Ying". This shows a part of Xinjiang County, the national historical and cultural city. Now the most famous pen is Yu Liangying writing brush.
Jiangzhou brushes are excellent choice of materials, mainly made of high quality wool and the tail of a weasel. The production process is very fine, with a total of 82, mainly composed by water work and dry work two major procedures. Jiangzhou writing brush has the characteristics of sharp, round, neat, tough, not split, with beautiful handwriting, clean and tidy, straight penholder, even and uniform tip, neat edge. Han Zuojun, a famous calligrapher in China, recited a poem to praise after using the Xinjiang-produced brush: "before just thought the inkstone in Jianzhou is good, who knows the brush here is better".After using Jiangzhou writing brushes, the national famous calligraphers Tian Yingzhang, Liu Bingsen, Dong Shouping also have inscription as a souvenir, to show congratulations. In May 1996, People's Pictorial made a special introduction to Jiangzhou writing brush.Yang Rudai, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC, wrote an inscription for Jiangzhou writing brush: "carry forward the national culture and revitalize Xinjiang economy".
